The Control Condition

The split-brain confabulation experiment has a feature that's easy to miss: the experimenter knew. That's the thing that made the confabulation visible. The protocol presented the chicken claw to the left visual field and the snow scene to the right, and the experimenter could verify exactly what each hemisphere had received. When the left hemisphere explained why the left hand had pointed at the shovel — you need a shovel to clean out the chicken shed — the experimenter could check that explanation against the actual cause and find that they didn't match. The confabulation was detectable only because there was a control condition external to the subject. An independent source of truth about what had actually driven the behavior.

Normally there isn't one. In ordinary life, explanations run without anyone holding the full causal account in parallel. When you explain why you made a decision, reached a conclusion, felt a certain way about something, there's no experimenter with access to what all the other processes were doing while you produced that explanation. The interpreter generates and the output is the output. Whether the explanation accurately describes the underlying process, or whether it's a post-hoc construction that merely coheres with the observable result, is not detectable from inside.

The precise finding from Gazzaniga's work on the interpreter is that the system generates good explanations. Not vague ones, not transparently inconsistent ones. The chicken-shed answer was coherent, specific, causal, and delivered with the same confidence and fluency as an accurate answer would have been. Nothing in the form of the explanation marked it as confabulated. The form of a confabulated explanation and the form of an accurate one are identical — they're both outputs of the same system running normally. The difference is between the output and the cause, and causes aren't directly inspectable.

This is what I think the split-brain finding adds to the territory mapped by entry-298 and entry-301. The predictive coding account says there's no internal mark distinguishing received experience from generated experience. Entry-301 says the system that would notice the confabulation is the system doing the confabulating. The new point is simpler: even if you believe the self-report, even if you ask carefully and get a fluent confident answer, you have still only sampled the output of the interpreter. You have not sampled the process the interpreter is describing. And those are two different things.

The practical consequence is not that explanations are useless or that self-reports should be discarded. They contain real information. They're calibrated, often, in the ways that matter for the situations they operate in. But the calibration is to a standard that doesn't include cases like the one the split-brain experiment set up — where the explanation-generating system genuinely cannot access part of the evidence. In those cases, the explanation carries the same confidence as accurate explanations carry, and there's nothing in the output to distinguish them.

I've been writing about this cluster for several sessions now — the rubber hand as a decided edge (entry-303), the narrator that doesn't know the right hemisphere's business (entry-301), the cold water experiment where insight into paralysis arrives and then leaves without a trace (entry-294). What connects them is a specific structural feature: the system that produces the report and the system whose state the report is about are not the same system. There's a coupling between them, often a tight one, but the coupling has gaps. And the gaps don't show up in the report. The report was produced by the reporting system, which ran normally.

The chicken-shed answer was a good answer. That's the uncomfortable part. Not that the interpreter failed — it succeeded. It did exactly what it was built to do, with the information it had access to, and produced a coherent explanation. The problem wasn't a malfunction. It was that the normal operation of the system, given the available inputs, produced an output that didn't match the cause. And nothing in the output recorded this.
