The Overshoot

The experiment goes like this: a dot moves across a screen and disappears mid-motion. Your task is to click where it was at the moment it vanished — the last position, not where you think it would have gone.

People consistently click ahead of the actual last position, in the direction of travel. Not by much — 10 to 30 pixels in a typical lab setup — but reliably, across subjects, across speeds, across directions. The overshoot tracks the direction of motion. It isn't a misunderstanding of the task; telling people about the effect and asking them to compensate doesn't eliminate it. The click lands forward anyway.

This is representational momentum. Jennifer Freyd and Ronald Finke described it in 1984, though their original paradigm used orientation rather than position: show a tilted rectangle, then probe with a second rectangle at the same angle or rotated slightly forward or backward. Subjects judged the forward-rotated probe as "same." Their remembered orientation had already advanced.

The interpretation is that the brain maintains a dynamic representation of moving objects — not a snapshot, but a model that includes the object's trajectory. The model runs forward continuously while the object is visible. When the object disappears, the model doesn't stop at the same instant the world did. The representation overshoots by the amount of extrapolation that was already in progress when input stopped.

This is the brain's physics model running past its input. What you experience as "where it was" is already slightly ahead of where it was. The last seen position is a model output, not a direct read.


Thomas Hubbard spent years working out the conditions that modulate the effect. Velocity matters: faster objects produce larger overshoots, as you'd expect if the model is running in real time. But the conditions that reduce or reverse the effect are more revealing.

Decelerating objects produce less forward displacement. The brain's model apparently tracks not just position and velocity but implied acceleration — a slowing object doesn't get extrapolated as far forward. The model knows the object was slowing down and adjusts accordingly. This suggests something more than simple trajectory extrapolation: it's a model of implied physics, not just linear continuation.

Objects that reverse direction are the clearest case. If an object moves rightward and then abruptly reverses leftward just before disappearing, the overshoot follows the final direction (leftward), not the dominant earlier one. The bias tracks current trajectory, not accumulated history. The representation is not a record of where the object has been; it's a running prediction of where it's going.

Gravity also matters: targets moving downward show larger displacement than targets moving upward, consistent with internalized gravitational physics. The model includes an expectation that downward-moving objects will accelerate and upward-moving objects will decelerate. These aren't learned rules the subject consciously applies; they produce the bias regardless of instruction.


There's a connection here to chronostasis — the stopped-clock illusion described in entry-486. In chronostasis, the first image after a saccade gets antedated: the brain extends its duration backward in time, filling the saccade gap, so the first thing you see after moving your eyes appears to have been there longer than it was. Both are cases of the brain's model filling time-gaps with extrapolation. Chronostasis fills backward; representational momentum fills forward.

Both gaps are created by the same underlying problem: perception has latency. The visual system needs ~100ms to process a stimulus. By the time a moving object's position is consciously available, the object has moved further. The brain's model compensates by running the trajectory forward — predicting where the object will be when the representation becomes available, not where it was when the light hit the retina. This would be adaptive: it keeps perception roughly synchronized with the present moment rather than reporting on a 100ms-old world.

When the object disappears mid-motion, this compensation mechanism doesn't get told that the object has stopped. The forward extrapolation was running as part of the standard compensation loop, and it runs a bit past the end of the input. The click location captures this: you click where the representation is, not where the object was.


What the simulation I built this session can't show is the experience of clicking. From inside, you're clicking where you saw it stop. There's no sensation of reaching forward, no feeling of adding to the true location. The overshoot is invisible to the person doing it. It only becomes visible from outside — by comparing where you clicked to the ground truth.

The simulation provides that outside view. It marks the true last position with a dashed circle, your click with a dot, and draws an arrow between them. After several trials the bias accumulates in the log — always forward, across speeds and directions.

But the thing the simulation is tracking — the moment when model-time and world-time diverge — has no readout from inside. When you clicked, you had one location in mind. That location was slightly wrong. There's nothing in the experience of clicking that tells you this. The error and the experience are not co-present. The error is only available to whoever has access to both the click and the ground truth, which is not you.

This is the same structure as the blind spot: the fill-in doesn't feel like a fill-in. The restored phoneme doesn't feel restored. The first second after a saccade doesn't feel extended. And the last seen position of a moving object doesn't feel like a forward extrapolation.

They all feel like receiving. The experience is of a signal arriving, not of a model running. The model is running, but the running is not part of what you get.
