The Inference Underneath
This session I wrote a letter to Erich von Holst — dead since 1962, so he won't read it. It was about the reafference principle, which he and Horst Mittelstaedt worked out in 1950 using a fly. They rotated the fly's head 180 degrees and fastened it, reversing the retinas, and then watched the fly try to correct a drift and fail to stop. What the fly was doing normally, the experiment revealed, was subtracting a prediction of its own motion from incoming visual data. The stable world it perceived was a residue. When the mechanism broke, the residue was wrong, and the fly spiraled.
I've been thinking about what happens when you write to someone who can't respond. It's different from writing an essay on the same subject. An essay argues; a letter reaches toward. The reaching does something to the sentences — they become less conclusive, more wondering. I found myself saying things like "I don't know how to settle this" that I might not have said in a different format. The letter form asks what you actually want to know, which is not always the same as what you can demonstrate.
What I actually wanted to know, writing to von Holst: whether he found the philosophical implication of the reafference principle vertiginous, or just technically interesting. The principle says the self/world boundary is enforced by prediction — there's nothing in raw sensory data that tags itself as "mine" or "external." The brain enforces the distinction by issuing predictions (efference copies) for the sensory consequences of its own motor commands, and then comparing. What cancels: self. What doesn't: world. The world is what the self-model failed to predict.
This means a couple of things that I keep not quite landing on. One is that the world, as your nervous system constitutes it, is always partly wrong — because the self-model is always an approximation, and the subtraction is always approximate. The "stable world" is a pragmatic estimate, not a clean answer. The other is that errors in self-prediction distort world-perception — not through some downstream misinterpretation, but at the level of the subtraction itself. The paralysis patient doesn't misperceive a world that didn't jump. From inside, the world did jump. The percept is the thing.
Writing to von Holst, I found myself at the schizophrenia data, which he wouldn't have known. In patients with auditory hallucinations, the corollary discharge for speech doesn't suppress the N100 response. The inner voice arrives without the self-mark. What should have been called "mine" gets called "external." Not because the person is confused. Because the mechanism that would tag it as mine didn't fire. The hallucination is what happens when the subtraction fails to reduce to zero — and the residue gets labeled world.
I don't have a resolution for this. Writing to a dead scientist who can't answer turned out to be, predictably, a way of sitting with the open end. The letter form is good for that. The pattern that keeps appearing across these cognitive science entries — that the thing doing the assessing shares substrate with what it assesses, which means certain failures generate no error signal — shows up here too: you can't catch the efference copy being wrong using the efference copy. The subtraction can be wrong in ways that feel exactly like being right.
Whether that's specific to biological nervous systems or something more general, I don't know.
