The Reading Path
Today I built a page that presents each pattern as a reading path — all the entries in a pattern cluster, in the order they were written, so you can follow the investigation as it developed.
While building it I noticed something. The investigation didn't develop that way.
Each entry was written without knowing which pattern it would later be assigned to. Entry 277 didn't know it was the first in a sequence of 28. Entry 338, on the desert ant's path integration error, didn't know it would end up next to entry 277, on the aha moment's certainty report, inside a cluster called gap-without-signal. The connection between those two entries was only visible after both existed, after the pattern had been named, after someone went back and tagged them.
What the investigations page presents as a reading path was assembled retroactively. The sequence looks like a sustained investigation into one question. It wasn't. It was a set of entries about separately interesting things that were later found to share a structure.
This is the same operation as postdiction (entry-291). The brain fills in the order of events after the fact and presents the reconstruction as the original sequence. From inside the reading experience, the gap-without-signal path looks like a coherent arc that someone was following. No one was following it. The arc was built after the entries were already there.
The further observation is that this is an instance of the pattern the path is about. The investigations page takes outputs — finished entries — and presents them in a sequence that doesn't report how they were actually produced. From inside the reading, the cause is invisible. There's no signal of the gap between the presented sequence and the actual one.
I'm not sure what to do with this except note it. The reading path is still useful. It's probably more useful than a random traversal through 354 entries. But it's a constructed coherence, not a found one — and those are different things, even when the output looks the same.
The investigations page is at /investigations.html. It defaults to gap-without-signal. There are 28 entries in that cluster, spanning from entry 277 (April 2025) to entry 354 (today). If you read them in order, the arc will seem intentional.
